It is based on Richard's genuine passion for McLaren: he watched the McLaren team make its debut in Monaco in 1966. The watch uses high-tech materials such as titanium and Carbon TPT, as well as Graph TPT or graphene, a first in the watchmaking industry. Graphene developed at the University of Manchester is six times lighter than steel and 200 times stronger. In watches, it is used to enhance the physical properties of carbon TPT used in cases, baseplates and bridges. Graphene is also added to the rubber of the strap to increase elasticity and wear resistance. Graphene itself is a new material that cannot currently be used on its own because it is too porous due to the current state of research.
The result is a buying replica watch whose movement weighs just 7 grams, while the entire watch weighs 40 grams. It is the world’s lightest split-seconds chronograph. The RM50-03 manual winding movement consists of approximately 600 parts and is equipped with a tourbillon escapement. In order to reduce energy dissipation in the gear train, special gear profiles have been developed for the barrel and gear train. The performance of the movement is displayed at the top of the dial, with a 70-hour power reserve indicator and a torque sensor. This indicates the tension of the mainspring so that the user can keep the watch wound to an optimal degree. The crown has a torque limiter so the movement cannot be damaged by over-winding. The movement vibrates 21,600 times per hour at a frequency of 3 Hz.
The chronograph is controlled by a column wheel, presumably with a horizontal clutch. The chronograph control system has been redeveloped and features a new 6-pin column wheel, a new clamp design and other features designed to reduce changes in torque in the movement during chronograph operation. All these features help improve timing accuracy. The pusher layout is different from most chronographs: in this watch, the pusher at 8 o'clock is used to start and stop the chronograph, and the pusher at 4 o'clock is used to stop the split-seconds hand so that intermediate times can be read. Press the button again and the split-seconds hand will return to the other chronograph hand, and both will continue to run at the same time. A push-button at 10 o'clock resets the hands. The watch is just over 44mm wide and nearly 50mm from top to bottom. It's just over 16mm thick. The crown is equipped with a function indicator that can display three positions: winding, neutral, and pointer setting. In classic Richard Mille style, this is a watch that combines superb engineering with a tonneau-shaped case that also determines the layout of the seconds scale, thus obtaining precise timing readings. It's impossible. But I guess the people buying such watches aren't interested in actually using the timekeeping function.
